Original Invitation & Program
You're Invited...
June 20, 2007
Dear AVMHS Colleagues,
Our annual meeting is coming up on Monday, July 16, 2007, in Washington, D.C., in Montreal 1 & 2 at the Marriott at Metro Center. In addition to the agenda [see below], I want to give you some further information about lunch and travel arrangements to Bethesda. Maps and printed directions will be handed out in the morning and advance copies will be available in our booth in the AVMA Exhibit Hall.
Travel...
After the presented papers session is completed around noon, there will be time for a brief rest break before traveling as a group by Red Line Metro train north to Bethesda, Maryland ( http://www.wmata.com). The Metro Center station is located just outside the Marriott at Metro Center hotel entrance. The straight-shot 8.1 mile train trip is estimated to take about 20 minutes (or 30 minutes door-to-door). Michael North and Phil Teigen will be our travel escorts. The cost is about $2.45 per person one-way. Getting your fare card in advance will save us all time and avoid line-ups in the busy station. They are available from dispensing machines at Metro stations. If anyone forgets it or does not have one, we will obtain some fare cards that morning prior to leaving.
If anyone cannot or prefers not to take the railway, taxis are available at $19.50 one-way plus $1.50 per person for the trip. Personal cars are not recommended owing to D.C. traffic and NIH visitor parking and security limitations.
Security…
The Medical Center Metro Station (Montgomery County) exits directly onto the National Institutes of Health campus. We must go through a visitor security check and have any bags x-rayed at the Gateway Center before entering the campus. Please bring a government issued photo ID and don't carry any unnecessary luggage, backpacks, or totes. More information for NIH visitors can be found at http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor/index.htm and for NLM at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/about/visitor.html. Michael, Phil or other NLM staff will be available at the Medical Center Metro Station to help guide us into the Gateway Center, through security, and over to lunch.
Lunch…
From the NIH Gateway Center security point, it is a short walk to the Natcher Conference Center (building #45, http://orf.od.nih.gov/AboutORF/Buildings/45.htm ) where lunch will be available in the Eurest Dining Center. The cafeteria has a variety of food, including a salad bar, pizza, hot entrees, soups, juice, soda, coffee, etc. The cost is reasonably priced at about $5-8 per lunch.
Tour…
Following lunch, we will walk directly across the street from the Natcher Center to the National Library of Medicine where Michael North will give us an insider's view of rare books and manuscripts related to horses in their collection.
I hope you are as excited about the program and once-in-a-lifetime tour of NLM's History of Medicine and rare books division as I am. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at zwwojcinski@comcast.net or the Secretary-Treasurer, Susanne Whitaker, at any time.
Sincerely,
Zbigniew Wojcinski
Program Chair/President-Elect

This year, the Society's booth will include a poster produced by the National Library of Medicine titled, “The Horse, a Mirror of Man: Parallels in Early Human and Horse Medicine” that is based on a mini-exhibit prepared by Michael North last spring. It highlights representative volumes on equine anatomy from 1500 to 1704, many of which may be seen during our tour. If you can find the time to help staff the booth, your participation is welcome and needed.
