2015 Smithcors Essay Contest

J. Fred Smithcors Student Veterinary History Essay Contest

Because history has a lot to tell us about our profession and ourselves 

2015

1st Prize Jennifer Yu, ’16, University of California, Davis West of West Nile: A Virus Conquers the New World.

2nd Prize (tie) Ellen Kim ’17, Kansas State University The Great Cattle Plague and Dr. John Gamgee: The Need for Historical Perspective on Trade and Public Health Policy.

2nd Prize (tie) Alexander Neale ’17, Tufts University In Sickness and In Health: A Marriage of Veterinary and Human Medicine, 1866-1881.

4th Prize Stephanie Liao ’17, Kansas State University Furry Valor: Tactical Dogs of World War I and II.

2016 Contest Information

Beginning in 1991, an annual essay contest sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical History Society was established.  This contest aims to encourage interest in history by encouraging participation by students enrolled in veterinary medical colleges in the United States, Canada, and West Indies..

It is named in honor of J. Fred Smithcors, DVM, PhD   for his many contributions to veterinary history as founder of the American Veterinary Medical History Society, author of several books on veterinary history, educator, publisher, and editor.

Winners are selected by a panel of AVMHS judges and receive cash prizes in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence.

First Prize $1200
Second Prize $1000
Third Prize  $800
Fourth Prize  $500

In addition to the cash prizes up to $1,000 travel allowance is available for the presentation of one winning paper at the AVMHS annual meeting held at the AVMA Convention.

In addition, every student that submits an essay that follows the guidelines will receive a complimentary one-year membership in the Society that includes two issues of Veterinary Heritage. The Society reserves the right to publish meritorious essays in whole or part in Veterinary Heritage: Bulletin of the American Veterinary Medical History Society.
