MEMORIALS and GRAVE SITE MARKERS
of Notable and Historically Significant Veterinarians

Cemeteries across the United States include varied types and styles of memorials to mark the grave sites of veterinarians who have contributed so much to the care and treatment of many species of animals, combatted and prevented disease, and enhanced the overall wellbeing of their local communities and the nation through the years.

This page provides suggestions for identifying grave sites and presents the location of memorials for some notable and historically significant veterinarians in the United States.

LOCATING GRAVE SITES FOR VETERINARIANS

Search the Find-a-Grave database to locate sites for deceased veterinarians. This international resource currently includes over 226 million cemetery and disposition records. Maintained by volunteer contributors, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Ancestry.com in 2013.

Search by Name – First, middle, last

                   Year born

                   Year died

                   Cemetery location

Find-a-Grave memorials can also be found when searching in Ancestry.com along with US Census, WWI registrations forms, city directory listings, birth and marriage certificates, immigration records, and many other genealogical documents.

Basic information can include:

                Full name

                Birth date and location

                Death date and location

                Cemetery and plot

IF NOT FOUND, consider creating a Find-a-Grave memorial or contacting the AVMHS Memorials Committee for advice and/or assistance in submitting needed information.

VISITING GRAVE SITES

Those interested in visiting gravesites of veterinarians in person are encouraged to check with the cemetery in advance. Open hours may vary daily and seasonally. In northern states, many may be closed during winter months.

For graves missing or lacking visible markers, flat in-ground markers can become covered and overgrown over time if not regularly maintained by cemetery staff beyond annual mowing or monitored by family members. Fragile monuments may have been vandalized or damaged by weather. In these instances, the Memorials Committee may provide suggestions for uncovering, repairing, or replacing those markers.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE GRAVE INFORMATION

The Society encourages additions and corrections to existing Find-a-Grave records and in creating new memorials.

First, gather all needed information, including portrait and image(s) of the cemetery grave marker, then…

  1. Create a Find-a-Grave account and submit the material

  2. Contact the AVMHS Memorials Committee for advice and assistance

AVMHS Memorials Committee is a sub-committee of the Society's Museums & Exhibits Committee
